Starting from the ancient architectural monuments, the caisson ceilings in the interior of the premises passed a long evolutionary path and occupied their niche in modern design solutions. And although the design of the ceiling areas with caissons lost its original function (relief of floors), it acquired a new birth in the form of decorative images.
If you adhere to accuracy in terminology, then a modern, recessed ceiling can be called “quasi-sleepless”. Caissons, unlike the architecture of Hellas, Ancient Rome, the Renaissance, are not made in the thickness of the overlapping structures, but are created artificially: by mounting bulkheads of various materials. Be that as it may, the use of such a technique of design enjoys a growing interest among designers and homeowners.
Properties of caisson ceilings
The creation of buried sections of regular geometric shapes in the form of squares, six- and octagons, rhombuses is traditionally considered to be classic in the design of coffered ceilings. The location of the caissons, or as they are called lacunae, in the classical version is assumed to be strict, evenly distributed. Along with the classical modifications, various interpretations in the formation and shaping of caissons are widespread.
When choosing any location and method of shaping the buried and elevated sections, such a ceiling has many positive qualities:
- esthetic and in something even magnificent appearance. The design, created by the alternation of beams and grooves, fits easily into the interiors of both country houses and city apartments. The interglobe space at the same time leaves designers complete freedom in the choice of finishing options;
- gives the room, in addition to decorative properties, excellent acoustic quality. The alternation of buried and elevated areas contributes to the creation of optimal conditions for damping air vibrations;
- possibility of use for the formation of beams of different in nature materials. The gaps between the caissons can be made of drywall, wood, polyurethane modules, MDF materials, and even thick grades of cardboard;
- the space created under the beams can be used for laying electrical and communication lines, ventilation and conditioning pipelines;
- unsurpassed opportunities to create light design of the room. The stepped structure allows you to install embedded and overhead lighting devices that are able not only to emphasize the decorative and finishing elements of the ceiling, but also to form the soft light atmosphere of the whole room;
- durability of structures. Coffered oak ceilings, for example, can serve for decades, acquiring additional decorative qualities and durability.
It is clear that the presence of such a list of advantages creates a certain list of shortcomings, the main ones being the complexity of the arrangement and the high budget component. A conditional disadvantage is the limited possibility of installation in rooms with low ceiling ceilings.
Materials for coffered ceilings
The design and diversity of the materials on the market provide masters with the possibility of performing coffered ceilings, which can be limited only by the flight of fancy, imagination and affordable financial possibilities.
Wooden coffered structures
The most expensive and difficult to install are caisson ceilings made of wood. This is explained by the cost of usable tree species and complex, in comparison with other materials, marking and installation processes.
Wooden lacunar ceilings are heavy, so they can be mounted on floors that have sufficient strength characteristics. To fix the beams, you should use hardware that can withstand quite serious breaking loads. The wood intended for the manufacture of beams must be dried in advance and treated with bio- and flame-retardant components.
With all the complications of pre-installation preparation and direct installation, a cooper ceiling from an array is a classic of the genre with all the attendant advantages:
- pleasant visual perception;
- solidity and thoroughness;
- environmental appeal;
- durability unavailable to other materials.
The range of wooden moldings, which has spread on the market, allows you to decorate rooms with caissons, even with relatively low ceilings.
With a ceiling height of more than two and a half meters, wooden beams of small thickness, made of light wood, are quite suitable for the formation of caissons, without creating the effect of lowering the coating.
Use of plasterboard materials
Drywall is one of the most common materials for interior decoration. Naturally, decompression constructions are not complete without its use. Perhaps double use of plasterboard sheets during installation. First, the gypsum suspended ceiling can serve as the basis for gluing the elements forming the caissons. Another option is to use GVL both as a basis and as a forming material for beams.
A plasterboard coffered ceiling has many advantageous factors for use:
- the material fits easily into any, even limited budget due to its low price;
- GVL is easily processed, it can be the basis for a wide variety of decorating materials;
- design features of plasterboard allow for additional heat and sound insulation measures;
- Ecological and fireproofing properties of gypsum board materials are not subject to doubt.
Among the shortcomings there are significant. Plasterboard designs involve the creation of bulk frames. This factor does not allow to create caisson ceilings from drywall in rooms with a low arrangement of floors. The material has a known brittleness, and the design of it require care when servicing and carrying out cleaning activities. In rooms with high humidity, it is possible to use brands with enhanced characteristics of moisture resistance.
Polyurethane ceiling options
Active introduction into use of caisson ceilings initiated the emergence of new materials for their arrangement. Polyurethane caisson ceilings are proof of this. A standard polyurethane module is almost ideal for self-designing caissons in any room. The modules are lightweight, easily processed and assembled to the ceiling covering with available compounds.
At cost, caisson ceilings made of polyurethane occupy an average price range and are available for use with a limited budget.
Caisson ceilings of MDF panels is another budget and affordable option for self-design. Even the master, who is not very sophisticated in design and finishing delights, is able, with a certain diligence and care, to mount a coffered construction of a decent appearance. MDF materials are processed using a simple set of tools, and their physico-mechanical properties make it possible to embody refined and bold ideas.
The disadvantages of caisson structures made of MDF materials include their low resistance to moisture, the ability to sustain combustion, and the inevitable temporary changes in geometric dimensions.
Caisson ceilings and the ways of their design, of course, did not exhaust their possibilities at all. The emergence of innovative materials and technologies for their decoration will support the distribution of caisson techniques for the design of ceiling areas.
